I just watched the film. Thanks! I loved the very traditional musical feeling to it all - the kind of theatrical nostalgia. Beautiful performances. The religious themes are really well handled.
My only minor criticism is that it's a fairly "straight" lesbian romance. Though they managed to convey much during the political rhetoric discussion/dance. Until then I wasn't sure I "bought" the couple - but that scene was really powerful and brought a lot of chemistry to the surface.
But, what I mean by a "heterosexual lesbian romance"....Their road trip was glossed over when I was dying to hear more of the interaction that made them fall for one another. They kiss a couple of times and it's almost platonic looking each time. I felt like even one awkward brushing of shoulders or glance across a room could've made the romance between them seem more real and more tangible.
Is this a creative decision because of the overall style of the film?
I did really enjoy it despite my little gripe! I will hopefully buy the DVD soon (though on eBay in australia it's pretty darn expensive so I'll check your postage price!).
Thanks again!
And can I say....Nikki is an amazing character. I thoroughly enjoy her attempts to not swear.
Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the movie, and I hear your criticism. In retrospect, I do wish we had filmed a couple more passionate kisses and moments of physical contact, so as to have had more choices in editing. It does take a little while for their romance to get off the ground, I agree. I'm glad you enjoyed Nikki's character, as I think Cara AnnMarie does a wonderful job, and people tend to focus on Liberty as the title role. Have you checked Amazon to see if they will ship the DVD to Australia? If not, I'm hoping we can get that set up soon, as I know we have quite a few fans in Australia.
Thanks for the reply... I've ordered the DVD through Amazon!
I'm really glad a musical exists now with LGB lead characters. I guess that's why I would've liked to see a little more between the two of them - not even necessarily an epic kiss. The interview they apparently did off-screen for Schnitzel (haha love the names by the way) for example. But I'm sure you had lots of constraints! And the fact I was left "wanting more" is a good sign for you, I should think.
Absolutely loved Nikki. Her face in the early Church scenes was hilarious - and how she softened to Liberty was conveyed really well without words.
Glad to hear that you were able to get the DVD from Amazon. Well, yes, better to leave the audience wanting more, as they say. We actually do have ideas for a "Liberty II," if we can make this one successful enough:)
Keen! I best tell everyone I know to buy it then because I want the sequel :)
Thanks so much for engaging in this discussion. I have so much appreciation for that.
Thank you. I always enjoy talking to people about the movie, and their reactions. And yes, I really appreciate your spreading the word. Our movie has gotten most of its publicity through word of mouth and social media. (I'm still hoping we can find a way to do some screenings in Australia, by the way.)
That would be great! There are lots of cinemas even in my state that enjoy screwing small/Indy films. I'm in the Blue Mountains of NSW and Glenbrook cinema would do it - and there's loads in Sydney itself. I've subscribed to your list so I'll keep an eye out ;) I would try to make all my friends go if it ever happens.
Good luck!!
Bought right now, cant wait to see tbh. Will update afterwards I suppose xD
Thanks! Hope you enjoy it.
